The level of care

What is partial hospitalization treatment?

PHP is a full day of treatment that you go home from. It keeps the structure of residential care at the point where living on site is no longer what you need, which is exactly where recovery is easiest to drop.

  • The same clinical work as residential care: groups, individual therapy, relapse prevention
  • Co-occurring depression, anxiety and trauma stay part of the program, not a separate track
  • A case manager who already knows you carries the plan across from residential
  • Sober living placement help, so where you sleep is settled before the step down

Not sure which level you need? It is not a question to guess at. A short call sorts it out: (888) 362-5576.

Residential treatment

You live here

The whole day is the program, and you sleep in the building. The right dose when home is not somewhere you can safely be yet.

Partial hospitalization

You live at home

The clinical day continues, but the evening is yours. The usual next rung down when you are steady enough to sleep somewhere else.

You are here

Intensive outpatient

Part of the day

Fewer hours again, several days a week, built around work or school. Where most people go once a full day is more than they need.

Worth knowing

Four things worth knowing about PHP

Who is PHP actually for?

Most often somebody finishing residential treatment who is steady but not ready for the week to go back to normal. It is also a reasonable starting point for someone who is medically stable, has somewhere safe to sleep, and needs more than a few hours of treatment a week. Admissions works out which of those is you on the call.

Where do I sleep?

At home, or in a sober living home if home is not the right place yet. That choice matters more than people expect — the stability of where you sleep is usually what decides whether this level of care works. Raise it early and our case managers will help you line the housing up alongside the program.

Will my insurance cover it?

Often, but outpatient levels are contracted separately from inpatient ones, so covering a residential stay does not automatically mean covering PHP at the same rate. It is worth knowing before you start. We will run your benefits with you on the phone and tell you what we find either way.

What happens after PHP?

Usually intensive outpatient, then outpatient treatment, with the hours coming down as work, home and routine come back in. It is one continuum rather than a series of separate admissions, and the same case manager carries the plan through it with you.

"Buena Vista was great for me. Comfortable, good groups, great staff. If I need to return I know they are there. And I'd recommend this place to anyone in need of recovery from addiction. Lolo at the front is always warm and welcoming, the nurses are caring and always there to help! Can't forget the BHTs always asking what they can do to help in whatever way they can."

"I cannot express enough gratitude for the support I received from Buena Vista Recovery. Katy went above and beyond in helping me navigate my court case and making pre-trial calls, ensuring I felt supported and informed every step of the way. Her dedication was truly remarkable. Mr Bacon and the entire staff played a pivotal role in changing my life for the better. Their compassion, understanding, and commitment to my recovery made all the difference. I highly recommend Buena Vista Recovery to anyone seeking help and transformation. Thank you all for everything!"

"So incredibly grateful for everyone that has been there for me throughout my recovery journey. I really miss residential lol. Not only were the staff there absolutely phenomenal and amazingly informed, but most really enjoyed what they were doing. The kitchen and food was five star most days. On top of all that, I got to have my own room and bathroom, queen size bed, vaulted ceilings, and flat screen tv. But, I am extremely grateful for the monthly Alumni events that we have. It's one of the highlights of my month every single time. Thank you Buena Vista. If I could give more stars, I so would."

"I'm so grateful for this place 💯!!! I learned so much about myself and got some great tools and the help I need. I'm out of inpatient but I'm still going there for services. I have all the love for the faculty and that place in general. They are amazing. Anyone that has anything bad to say about Buena Vista was either there for the wrong reasons or weren't ready. Thank you guys all the way around"

"I just want to say thank you to Buena Vista and the staff that work there. These people care. I can personally tell the difference between someone who just comes in for a paycheck and someone who has unconditional love and concern for every individual that they work with. From detox to out patient the staff go above and beyond to get their patients needs met! A special thanks to my case manager Katy for believing in me when I didn't even believe in myself. She met with me every day she worked and set me up for success! I'm on the next chapter of my life not only clean but finally happy. Thank you Katy!! And thank you Buena Vista. I recommend anybody needing help to at least check in for detox. Much love to you all"

Questions about PHP

Does Buena Vista offer a partial hospitalization program?+

Yes. PHP runs at our Chandler facility as part of a full continuum of care, alongside medical detox, residential treatment, intensive outpatient and outpatient treatment. Because all of it happens in one building with one team, stepping down does not mean a second admission somewhere new.

What is the difference between PHP and residential treatment?+

Where you sleep. Residential treatment is live-in, with the whole day built around the program. PHP keeps the clinical day and sends you home at the end of it. The therapy, the groups and the mental health care are the same work at a different dose.

What is the difference between PHP and IOP?+

Hours. PHP is a full clinical day; IOP is part of one, several days a week, designed to fit around work or school. Most people move from PHP to IOP as they stabilize, and your case manager decides that timing with you rather than to a fixed schedule.

Do I need to complete detox first?+

If you are still drinking or using daily, then yes, and medical detox is in the same building. Outpatient levels of care assume your body is already stable. Call and describe the last few days honestly — admissions will tell you which level of care fits, and nothing about that conversation commits you to anything.

Can I work while I am in PHP?+

A full clinical day is usually more than a job fits around, which is what IOP and outpatient treatment are for. If work is the thing you cannot move, say so on the call: the point of a continuum is that there is a level of care that fits your week rather than one you have to fail out of.

Do you help with sober living during PHP?+

Yes. Sober living placement assistance is part of what our case managers do, for exactly this phase. We do not run the housing ourselves, so the help is in knowing the local landscape and getting it lined up before you step down rather than after.

Start with one call. We'll take it from there.

We answer at any hour of the day or night. There is nothing you have to decide on that first call, and nothing you need to have worked out before you make it.
