Yes. They are two names for the same program — Arizona's Medicaid program — and it covers substance use and mental health treatment.

In Arizona it is usually called Access. Either way, the state's Medicaid program covers real addiction treatment — medical detox and a full residential stay — and the majority of the people we care for are covered exactly that way.

Access covers more than people expect

State coverage is widely assumed to mean a waiting list and a watered-down version of treatment. It does not. AHCCCS covers medically supervised detox and a full residential stay, in the same building, in the same private rooms, with the same clinical team as everybody else.

In fact, Medicaid authorizations for residential care often run longer than commercial ones — which means more time to do the work rather than less.

You will not be treated differently here for how your care is funded. Around six in ten of the people in our care are covered by Access.

Medical detox

Around-the-clock nursing, physician oversight and medication to keep you comfortable while your body clears. Typically a few days, depending on what you have been using and your medical history.

Residential treatment

Covered

A full live-in stay, commonly authorized somewhere between thirty and forty-five days — often a longer stay than commercial plans allow. Private room, catered meals, group and individual therapy.

Co-occurring mental health care

Covered

Depression, anxiety, PTSD and trauma treated alongside substance use inside the residential program, rather than as something you have to arrange separately afterwards.

Will treatment cost me anything?+

For people covered by an Access plan we are in network with, treatment is covered. There is no separate bill for the room, the meals or the therapy. If anything about your particular plan works differently, we will tell you before you arrive rather than after.

How do I find out which plan I have?+

The plan name is printed on your AHCCCS card — Banner University Family Care, Mercy Care, Health Choice, Molina and Arizona Complete Health are the common ones. If you cannot find the card, we can usually work it out from your name and date of birth on the phone.

Do I get less time in treatment on Access?+

Generally the opposite. Residential stays authorized through Medicaid often run around thirty to forty-five days, which tends to be longer than commercial plans allow. Detox is usually a shorter stay, sized to what your body needs.

What if I have Access but no way to get there?+

Say so when you call. We provide airport pickup, and for anyone coming from further out our admissions team will talk through the practicalities with you rather than leaving transport as your problem to solve.

What if I'm not on AHCCCS yet?+

You can still call. Being mid-application, or unsure whether you qualify at all, is a perfectly normal place to start from, and we can talk through what your options look like in the meantime — including what treatment costs without insurance.
